(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0272775723000183\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Economics of Education Review<\/a>)<\/section><\/div>\n  <\/li>\n          \n                                  \n                <li class=\"flex text-gray-900 list-none\">\n          <sonic-icon class=\"mr-2\" color=\"#533FBE\" size=\"small\" icon=\"chevron-double-right\"><\/sonic-icon>\n        <div class=\"non-title text-gray-700 self-end text-base\"><section class=\"checklist-item\" data-icon=\"chevron-double-right\" data-color=\"#533FBE\" data-size=\"small\">60% of the 400 women in tech Logitech surveyed were encouraged by a parent or instructor.<\/section><\/div>\n  <\/li>\n          \n        <\/ul>\n      <\/section>\n\n\n\r\n\r\n<p>Women students are underrepresented in computer science majors and then again in the post-grad workforce. Imagine how many more women would pursue tech careers if society supported <a href=\"\/resources\/women-in-computer-science\/\">women's computer science<\/a> journeys.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The Logitech survey shows that support can make a world of difference, which is where coding bootcamps might have a chance to shine.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\n        \n  \n  <a class=\"subnav-waypoint\" name=\"do-coding-bootcamps-help-women-in-tech\" id=\"do-coding-bootcamps-help-women-in-tech\"><\/a>\n\n\r\n<h2>How Bootcamps Level the Tech Playing Field<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>Bootcamps can provide women with the support, resources, and mentorship opportunities to enter the tech field. Bootcamps are also a tool to help women who left STEM make their return.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>In the U.S., women in coding and other computer science pursuits leave the field at three crucial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0272775723000183\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">drop-off points<\/a>: pre-college STEM readiness, selecting a STEM major, and securing or retaining a post-grad STEM job.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Bootcamps can give pre-college and college students the peer network and mentor support to stick with the major. Bootcamps may also teach female graduates from any major the skills to land &mdash; and keep &mdash; a tech job.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Because <a href=\"\/degrees\/computer-science-worth-it\/\">not all STEM jobs require a degree<\/a>, some bootcamps can help women skip the \"STEM major\" drop-off point altogether. Bootcamps tend to have less stringent admission policies, which makes STEM education more accessible. Accessible education can lead to a boost in representation for women in data.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>As an alternative to college, students complete bootcamps faster than earning a four-year degree &mdash; but bootcamps are still a large investment of time and money. When choosing a bootcamp, women should make sure it is verified by the <a href=\"https:\/\/cirr.org\/about\/school-members-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Council on Integrity Results Reporting<\/a> (CIRR). CIRR membership ensures the bootcamp's claims about its student outcomes are accurate.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Beyond supporting women in data at the initial drop-off points, coding bootcamps can help level the employment playing field, especially by meeting women when they are transitioning to the workforce.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>According to a 2023 article by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0272775723000183\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jamin D. Speer<\/a>, 41% of the gender gap in STEM is due to only 32% of women holding STEM occupations by age 30. By contrast, 48% of men stay in the field by that age.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Bootcamps can help reduce the drop-off rate at the end of the STEM education pipeline. With a coding bootcamp, women can gain <a href=\"\/bootcamps\/rankings\/ux-ui\/\">skills in UX\/UI<\/a>, data analytics, <a href=\"\/careers\/web-developer\/\">web development<\/a>, and data science in a year or less. They can use bootcamps to build support networks of other women, which can help protect them from the isolation that may cause women to leave tech jobs.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Additional training, networks, and more experience can help women enter the computer science workforce. They allow women to better withstand the pressures of the first year of employment in a field that is often more demanding of them than men employees. Because women in coding are currently underrepresented, bootcamp instructors are more likely to be men &mdash; even in bootcamps marketed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shecodes.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">explicitly for women<\/a>. Men sharing their knowledge is allyship in action, and perhaps one day, there will be more women as bootcamp instructors.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Landing a computer science job is typically faster for those with the luxury of time. General Assembly, a coding bootcamp provider with immersive courses in software engineering, UX, and data science, said 74.4% of their 5,105 <a href=\"https:\/\/ga-public-downloads.s3.amazonaws.com\/General-Assembly-Outcomes-Report-2020.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">students found employment<\/a> in their fields within six months. The caveat: The job search was full-time.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Job searching full-time is a luxury. Having the schedule flexibility to attend synchronous bootcamps is a luxury. Beyond that, being able to slot your life around a full-time bootcamp or fit a part-time bootcamp into the responsibilities of adulthood is no easy task.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Bootcamps can improve the stats for women in data by offering more asynchronous virtual programs. <a href=\"\/bootcamps\/rankings\/self-paced\/\">Self-paced programs<\/a> are especially beneficial for parents.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Given the difficulty women already face as employees of the tech field, parenthood impacts them at high rates. Helping women advance in tech lifts us all. When women bring their lived experiences to the tech sector, society sees innovations in <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26974260\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">domestic violence reporting<\/a> and apps that continue to revolutionize everything from heart attack education to dating.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Bootcamps can help women and other marginalized identities translate what they know into tools that help society. Coding bootcamps give students the computer language skills and platform to make a potentially lasting impact.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\n        \n  \n  <a class=\"subnav-waypoint\" name=\"resources-for-women-in-coding\" id=\"resources-for-women-in-coding\"><\/a>\n\n\r\n<h2>Resources for Supporting Women in Tech<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"pl-4\" style=\"border-left:3px solid #1271E4\">\r\n<p><strong>Support groups for women in data and tech<\/strong>, like <a href=\"https:\/\/empowered-tech.com\/services\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Empowered Tech<\/a>, foster emotional connection and offer education on everything from impostor syndrome to workplace communication. Some groups have membership or event fees.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Larger companies might have in-house employee resource groups or subgroups for female coding and data employees. They offer programming like job seeker luncheons, career summits, and resource libraries.<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"pl-4\" style=\"border-left:3px solid #1271E4\">\r\n<p><strong>Nonprofits with national chapters<\/strong> are also a way to seek support in closing the computer science gender gap. <a href=\"https:\/\/girlsintech.org\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Girls In Tech<\/a> offers bootcamps, hackathons, and virtual workshops.<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"pl-4\" style=\"border-left:3px solid #1271E4\">\r\n<p><strong>Member organizations<\/strong> with job boards and coding tutorials, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenwhocode.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Women Who Code<\/a>, also offer scholarships and free tickets to conferences<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\n        \n  \n  <a class=\"subnav-waypoint\" name=\"faq\" id=\"faq\"><\/a>\n\n\r\n<h2>Frequently Asked Questions About Coding and Women<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"border-thick rounded-lg px-5 border-primary-50 mb-4\">\r\n<h3>Is coding a good career for women?<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p>Coding skills can, with enough experience, lead to well-paying jobs. But if your definition of \"good\" involves flexible hours or decent health benefits, that varies by employer. Toxic gendered behavior is a top reason women in coding leave the field, and you won't know what your coworkers are like until you get there.<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"border-thick rounded-lg px-5 border-primary-50 mb-4\">\r\n<h3>Are there a lot of women working in data?<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p>According to the National Girls Collaborative Project (NGCP), 35% of the STEM workforce is women.
